Got two minutes?
We’re gonna change your life.
With ONE simple mirrorless camera setting!
This is probably our favorite camera setting.
Ever!
It’s so easy to set once…
And enjoy the benefits FOREVER.
Ready? Let’s go!
We shoot with a Canon R6 Mark II mirrorless camera.
We’ve been professional photographers for over a decade and it’s without question the BEST CAMERA we’ve ever owned.
(You can read more about the R6 Mark II here)
Something we LOVE about this camera is the eye detection technology
In the old days, we had to manually move the multi-controller with our thumb (we call it the “toggle” button) in order to move our focus point to our subject’s eye.
The “toggle” button is here:
Toggling worked fine.
It’s what we used FOR YEARS.
It was a little slow but it was the best there was.
(Enter mirrorless cameras)
Mirrorless cameras have INCREDIBLE eye detection technology, so instead of US manually moving the “toggle” button with our thumb until the focus point is hovering over our subject’s eye…
THE CAMERA FINDS OUR SUBJECT’S EYE FOR US!
AND FAST!
This. Is. A. Game. Changer.
This setting makes us so much FASTER as shooters.
That means we’re able to nail a wider variety of poses and interesting compositions in LESS time, all while making our client experience even better!
That’s why we set our AF-On button to use the automatic eye-tracking detection when we shoot.
Like all technology though… it’s not perfect.
When we shoot portraits and there are only a few people in our frame, it’s almost perfect, and we love it.
But when we’re at a wedding.
Or there are a lot of people in the frame…
The camera doesn’t always choose the person WE would choose to focus on.
For example, when the bride is coming down the aisle, or up at the altar, the camera might accidentally choose to focus on one of the guests in the crowd.
It can stop your heart when the focal point does this.
And picks… NOT THE BRIDE
Talk about a panic moment!
Especially during something critical like an aisle walk!
That’s why we also have good ol’ traditional toggle focus on another back button (*).
This way, if eye detection chooses the WRONG person, we can simply switch our thumb from the AF-ON button to the * button in a split-second.
We call this star button our “manual override.”
Think of it like a pilot.
Eye detection is autopilot.
Traditional focus is the pilot grabbing control of the plane.
We hope this mirrorless camera setting helps YOU be a faster and more effective shooter!
