There we were…
Frantically hammering nails into the wall, hoisting up canvases like we were on an HGTV speed-decorating challenge 💪
Painter’s tape?
Check.
Measuring tape?
Check.
Tiny fluffy faux plants from HomeGoods we swore we’d find a place for someday?
Check, check and check.
We were in full-on home makeover mode.
The only thing missing was a slow-mo montage set to inspiring makeover music and matching paint-splattered overalls 💁♀️
But how did we get here?Let’s rewind. To our newlywed days.
Fresh out of college.
Young, broke, but totally in love.
We were living on one teacher’s salary in a tiny condo with one bathroom sink.
(Getting ready for work in the mornings was more like an Olympic event that we probably should’ve called “The Sink Shuffle,” where we danced around each other with the grace of that Australian break dancer.)
But that tiny condo served us well.
In fact, we lived there for eight years.
While most of our friends were buying starter homes, we were laser-focused on building our photography business on nights and weekends (in between teaching fourth and fifth grade), dreaming of the day we could go full-time.
After a lot of late nights (and even more mistakes)…
We went from being elementary school teachers who didn’t know what all the buttons on the camera did…
To full-time, six-figure photographers 🤯
Still dancing around one sink 😂
Eventually, we looked up long enough to realize, wait… we could actually buy a house.
A real house.
With a backyard. An attached garage.
And yes… TWO. BATHROOM. SINKS 🙌
We were giddy.
We spent our date nights at HomeGoods.
Hunting for deals.
Scoring a mirror for 70% off (still proud).
Piecing it all together slowly, one pretty little thing at a time.
We had a strong start: furniture set, a few walls done…
But it was more house than we’d ever had. And eventually, we got stuck.
We’d stare at blank walls, shrug and think:
“We’ll get to that later.”
Overwhelmed by the options.
Afraid to make the wrong choice.
Put holes in the wrong spot.
Choose the wrong art.
We waited for the “perfect” vision that never came.
So as you can imagine…
Some rooms stayed half-done. Others, basically empty.
And “we’ll get to it someday” turned into years.
We had babies. Our business kept growing. But when it came to those blank walls, “someday” just never came.
Then came the plot twist.
We felt it so strongly.
God was calling us to move to Tennessee.
Which meant:
Selling our house.
Taking listing photos.
And making it actually look like a finished home 😅
So we did what we’d been avoiding for years.
We pulled everything out of the garage. Art. Shelves. Vases. That adorable tray we forgot we bought.
We started hanging and styling with the confidence of Shea McGee in a Target catalog.
And y’all… suddenly, the house looked… amazing.
Cozy. Welcoming. Full of life.
We fell in love with it all over again.
We even second-guessed the move for a minute 🫠
And the thing we couldn’t stop saying?
“Why didn’t we do this SOONER?!”
We could’ve enjoyed it for years. But we made every excuse to put it off, thinking it was too overwhelming to start.
Sound familiar?
We’ve felt that same way in our business.
Waiting to make a move because it feels too important to get wrong.
Too big. Too risky. Too hard.
Maybe you’re there now.
You know you need a website.
But you’re putting it off, thinking…
– “I’ll do it… when my photos are perfect.”
– “I just don’t have time right now…”
– “I’ll definitely do that… someday.”
Let us lovingly say: don’t wait.
Because here’s the kicker in our own story: when our house went on the market?
It sold well over asking.
With a bidding war.
And the new owners called it their dream home.
What if we kept putting it off?
