Dear Amy,
For the last twelve weeks, I’ve had the most special privilege of my life. A front row seat. To watching you live the happiest season of yours. It’s been so hard to know what to say. So, instead, I thought I’d tell you what I see. Here’s you, my darling, through my eyes:
— You are kind. Just minutes after giving birth, you thanked each person in the room individually. Even though he won’t remember it, that was our boy’s first lesson in manners, and class.
— You are joyful. We prayed for a happy baby, and got one in spades. I’m thankful that he smiles with his eyes. Just like you. You are patient. He’s not always an angel. Sometimes more like the spawn of a gremlin and a pterodactyl when he’s overly tired. But no matter how long (or loud) he screams. You just walk faster, hold him tighter and talk to him sweeter. It’ll be no wonder when he likes you better.
— You are intentional. Even though your iPhone is a hot, disorganized mess, I’m thankful that you care so much about our son that you’ve downloaded every baby app and development tracker you can get your hands on, and have read every piece of infant research. On the entire Internet. If all those windows could just not all be open at once, that’d be great 🙂 You read “Pout Pout Fish” to him (with voices and sounds effects) every day. I could listen to that forever.
— You are beautiful. Even though YOU hate your stretch marks, and when you see what pregnancy did to your body, you still sometimes cry. I want you to know that you’ve never (EVER) been more beautiful to me. Where you see stretch marks, I see “Becks” marks.
— You are faithful. Through it all, you haven’t stopped reading your Bible or praying for people every morning, and every night. Usually while nursing because you have spare time 😂 I hope our son loves others and Jesus like you.
I used to think I was the luckiest man in the world, because I got to tell people, “She’s my wife.” But our son has me beat. Because when he gets older, he’ll have the unique honor of telling people, “She’s my mom.” There’s only one thing better than being your better half — and that’s being half you.
Happy 1st Mother’s Day, my love.
