They held hands, and the keys to their new house, too. The lock turned, clicked, and opened the front door. To their new abode. And their new life together. They crossed the threshold, entered, and with every few steps walked into their future. And as they looked into the bare house, in their eyes, it wasn’t bare at all. They saw the dining room where they’d host dinner parties. The bedrooms where their kids might sleep one day. The living room where the Christmas tree would light up the winter.
That first night, though, the house was nothing more than empty rooms filled with dreams. Big ones. But dreams all the same. As they walked and dreamed together, painting their blank canvas with a bright tomorrow, they saw it, the gift the previous owner had left for them: a bottle of sparkling champagne. Allie and Jon took the bottle, popped the cork, watched the bubbles percolate their glasses, and sat on the empty living room floor. They didn’t have furniture to lean on or anything to hang on the walls, so they leaned on each other, hung their hopes on forever, and dreamed of ways to turn their new house into a home — even though, just by their presence, they already had. They toasted to the future. To the day they would become Mr. and Mrs. Emmons.
Allie and Jon, thank you for inviting us to capture the first day of your new lives together.
