Making The Leap

We’re in the middle of a series for photographers and aspiring entrepreneurs called “Making the Leap” where we’re sharing our ten practical steps for going from part-time photographers to full-time. Or, as author Jon Acuff puts it, going from your day job to your dream job without it becoming a nightmare.

For the past four years, we lived double lives.

Elementary school teachers by day.

Photographers by night and weekend.

Until this year.

When we made the leap.

From our day job to our dream job.

We know what you’re thinking, Good for you, but it’s not possible for me.

We understand.

We really do.

Because, at one time, we thought the same thing.

But it is possible.

There is hope.

There’s no magic formula.

There’s no “get full-time quick” scheme.

It doesn’t happen over night, and you don’t want it to. Trust us.

But it can happen.

We’re living proof.

But you have to have a plan.

You have to be honest with yourself.

You have to be willing to work harder than everyone else.

Last week, we went LIVE online to share our ten tips for “Making the Leap” from part-time to full-time.

Next week, we’ll begin a brand new series called “Making the Leap” designed just for YOU.

We’ll go into more detail about the ten steps we took and we’ll answer your questions, too.

So, you’ve got some homework before next week. It’s the warm-up to this ten week journey you’re about to take.

1. Watch the replay of “Making the Leap” here:

2. Read our article in Shoot & Share Magazine.

When I saw Heather Morris’ maternity session which featured in People magazine, I was in love. I had to look up Amy & Jordan right away. Since, then I have been following you guys closely and I show your photography page to all of my friends that are either engaged or getting married. I’m new in the photography world but I think that it’s appreciating beautiful images that has really made me a fan out of you two. I hope to one day be half the photographers you both are.

I want to say this Amy and Jordan. You guys seem super sweet, and in a good way. It’s refreshing to find this type of love and care for not only your clients, but for human beings in general. I love your spirit, and I hope to keep following you two with enthusiasm, aside from being tired from working all the time on third shift and not getting enough rest. I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with next.

Hi, James! WOW! Thank you SO much! Seriously. SO much. You have no idea how much we needed that encouragement today. It came at just the right time! We appreciate you so much and thanks for sharing that with us. It made our day and gave us the fuel we needed to keep pushing through one of our busiest months ever. Thank you 🙂

You’re more than welcome guys. We all need a little booster shot of encouragement every now and then. I’ve been listening to the podcast where Ben Hartley, Heartly, whichever is correct. Anyway, about how Amy had the steep flu and was snotting in you guys bathroom after that exhausting wedding. And how that was a deciding moment for you and your business. I only hope that I can find the strength that you guys have someday. Thanks for the stories, and I will keep following you two.

    November 2nd, 2015 at 10:25 pm

Sorry, James! For some reasons we’re just now seeing this reply! BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH! To be honest, you’ll be surprised at how strong you can be and how hard you’ll fight when your back is against the wall and there’s nowhere else to go and nothing else left to do. You’ll find it when you’re faced with it. One of our favorite quotes is, “God doesn’t call the equipped. He equips the called.” Good luck, friend!

I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of you guys until Turn It Up conference! I have been thumbing through your blog (like, way into the depths of your blog) and journaling through what I learn. It’s so rich! I love your story about saving for a rainy day and starting out debt free. I’m just feeling a bit discouraged, as my husband is not a photographer and doesn’t see it as a potential for income and fulfillment. It’s an expensive hobby of mine to him, and I feel like I can provide for us through my business one day. But I can’t ask him to provide for both of us through just his income, so that I can save & start my business full time off of mine. It just seems selfish. But your story is giving me the encouragement I need to talk to him about why it’s so important to me, and maybe I’ll start working a second job to prepare for my leap! I feel like I’ve figured out a lot, but have a hundred more questions. 🙂 Love what you’re doing. Thank you!

Wow, thanks so much for sharing that Jo! Keep pursuing what you love with passion! We both worked day jobs AND Jordan took on a second job to make this dream a reality, so we know exactly what that feels like!

Wow, you guys just get more and more amazing. I love that you provide such high quality materials no matter who the audience is- the world, C@Heart, People magazine, lol, you guys are the best and there’s a reason you’re killing it.

P.S. I tell at least one person a week about your ‘yellow is my second favorite color’ story…so cute.

I cannot say thank you enough that you give of your time, talent and hearts to help us who want to learn. I am not full time yet and know it is a little way off at the moment as I have 4 small children and only one income so money is tight. I want you to know that your teaching is so insightful and helpful and so honest that i am learning so much for your. Thank you . I am getting small amounts of client in our little country town and trying to build my business and just listening to you inspires me to keep trying every day. Your faith also has been inspiring and refreshing for me and I know it is God who can open and close doors and I cannot wait until it is my time to succeed. I will continue to learn and learn and shoot and practice and grow as much as I can and will follow you and your amazing example. So thank you again and again. Marnie

I have only been in business for myself only 2yrs as of oct 1 and it’s very hard to get clients and only people that I attracted was cheap people who try their hardest to slick me by comparing me to actual studios and I get very offensive because that is my main feral goal
Looking at y’all work is so much inspiration. I’m just stuck how do I get Constance work even if it’s only 1-5 clients a week

I’m not sure where to post this, but I have to be honest. I have been so overwhelmed by emails in my Inbox that I almost hit the delete button before reading your email “3 Reasons to Be Thankful for Where You Are Right Now”! Wow – it was like you were speaking directly to me! I have been struggling this past year with hating my day job and wanting so much to quit and pursue my dream job. I work at the school my daughter’s attend which saves us a ton of money for tuition. They are juniors in high school (twins) and as much as I am looking forward to quitting my day job in 2018 when they graduate I also don’t want time to go too quickly because than they will be off to college! Your email definitely changed my perspective and I have printed it out to remind me daily to be thankful that my girls go to a great school because of me. I will use this remaining year to continue to pray and plan for the future of my business and educate myself. THANK YOU – I’m so glad I didn’t hit delete!!
