Hey, friends! Well, it’s officially been six weeks since our sweet baby boy, Beckett, was born, but we’re just now giving our first month update! Over that time, we’ve heeded the number one piece of advice from every planet on the parent: slow down and savor every snuggle, because even though the days are long, the years are short and time moves all too fast. So, that’s exactly what we did! And now that we’re in (somewhat) of a routine and finally emerging from the brain fog of compounded sleep-deprivation as a result of having a newborn, we wanted to share our first Demos Family Update with you!
Here’s what happened this month:
— Since Beckett was born, a lot of people have asked Amy what twenty hours of unmedicated childbirth is like. Her response? Have you seen the last five minutes of Braveheart?
— Seriously though, an unmedicated labor was by far one of the hardest things we’ve ever done. Both physically and mentally. But also the most rewarding. We labored at a birth center with an incredible team of midwives, and ended up delivering Beckett on a birthing stool. We were able to pull him up into our arms together, and that first moment he laid on Amy’s chest and took his first breath was one of the most euphoric, beautiful, most memorable moments of our entire lives.
— Beckett Harry Demos. Our first born son. We named him after Jordan’s dad, Harry. When we were first choosing names, we knew we wanted to honor Jordan’s dad, so then we just went searching for a first name that we liked with Harry. We found Beckett on a really long baby list of names on one of those baby name sites. It literally means beehive. When he gets older, we’ll extend that a little and tell him it means busy, hardworking and industrious!
— What we reeaallyy like is the name’s multi-generational appeal. “Baby Beckett” is cute for a newborn and we love the nickname “Becks.” We can already see him as a teenager. Then, when he’s 100 years old and lost his mind, he can be “crazy old man Beckett down the street.”
— From the first night, we became grateful that Jordan wasn’t the one responsible for our baby’s food supply! Deep into the dark of the night, Beckett didn’t wake up on his own (he was just as tired from the birth experience as we were!) but he, of course, needed to eat. Amy shook Jordan and whispered, Hey, we gotta get up and feed Becks. He deliriously replied, “J-j-j-ust f-f-four mo-oore hours… I gotta sleep… he can wait a few m-m-more hours… he’ll be fine.”
— Amy’s response? “No, no, no… He’s a newborn baby. THEREFORE (because Science)… He will actually NOTÂ be fine!” That’s when she turned on all the lights. And removed Jordan’s covers.
— The first few days, Amy’s most repeated phrase, usually while skin-to-skin with Becks, was, “I just feel like my heart’s gonna explode all the time.”
— Then our sweet friend, Alisa, did Becks’s official newborn photos. The search is still underway for fragments of Amy’s heart.
— The first few weeks, he would only open one eye, so we nicknamed him “Our Little Pirate Guy.” Now that he’s opening both (at the same time), Amy’s current nickname for him is “Little Nugget” while Jordan’s is “Stinky Magoo.” We have no idea where either came from, but we’re pretty sure they reveal more about who WE are than who he is.
— Cravings: Since Amy didn’t eat deli meat for nine months, she’s currently taking it out on Potbelly’s sandwiches, and killing an embarrassing amount of Perfect Bars and apples in between.
— On a related note, the night after Becks was born, Amy had her very first “glass” of wine (if you consider two ounces a glass!) since discovering we were pregnant. She liked it so much that she’s been pairing white wine with her Potbelly’s sandwiches. Fine dining at its best, right?
— Netflix: We watched the entire series of Parenthood (again) in just the first three weeks of maternity leave. Those late night feedings add up fast! Currently, we’re working our way through The Good Wife on Hulu and LOVING it.
— Our cats have not been quite as thrilled about Becks as we are. One of our cats, Mr. Carson, the one who laid on Amy’s belly and purred for nine months, was so scared of him at the beginning that he’d run in the other room every time Beckett moved a limb. But over the last month, he’s adjusted to the baby just fine. Our other cat, William, still looks like he wants to savage Becks all the time. Lady and the Tramp style.
— Amy’s parents are first-time grandparents! Her dad says, no matter how he’s feeling, he gets a “Becks Boost” every time he comes over. We’re thankful to get that boost 24/7.
— Getting out of the house is harder than it used to be, so we treasure our morning and evening walks especially since springtime is Arizona’s weather moment to shine. It was really the only time we left the house in the first month, other than for Becks’s doctor appointments, so we feel so grateful Beckett was born during the part of the year with Arizona’s best weather.
— Public Service Announcement: If you’re pregnant, GO DO THINGS! All. The. Things. In hindsight, we’re SO thankful we made so many HomeGoods runs and finished Beckett’s neutral baby animal nursery before he was born — especially because that meant our dear friend and photographer, Melissa Jill, could do a lifestyle newborn session with us and Becks in there!
— Speaking of pictures, we took over a thousand on our phones in the first month. If we keep this up, we’re going to need a 200TB iPhone. They make those, right?
— We are so smitten with our little boy. We love him more than we ever thought possible and just feel so thankful for this precious gift.
Here’s a little look at our first month as a family of three:
This was Jordan the entire month.
Can you blame him, though?
The first few weeks, Amy would hold Beckett close and say “I can’t believe he’s mine. I love him so much I feel like my heart is going to explode” through a sea of mom tears.
It’s just so much better than we could’ve ever imagined!

GREAT GRANDPA!!
Meanwhile, Amy’s appetite could not be contained.
And the family love continued…
Beckett meeting his cousin, Lexie! Even though they’re slightly different sizes right now, they’re going to be in the same grade one day! So special to have them side by side!
Uncle Mumu!
The cats still don’t know what to think of the little creature we brought home. Mr. Carson wins for most well-adjusted so far.

So thankful for these sweet ladies! Beckett was SO challenging during his newborn shoot, but Alisa and Kara were SO patient with him! Serious angel women.

Our sweet doula, Dianne, came over for a visit and gave us the birth story she wrote for us along with some beautiful photos, and our rockstar midwife, Belinda, at Willow Birth Center came over for a house visit just 48 hours after he was born. We’re so thankful for the amazing team of women who helped us bring our baby boy into this world with such incredible care.
As the days went by, we still snuck in every chance we could to snuggle him, but also started adventuring out of our room more!
Each day, we see a little more of Beck’s personality. He’s opening his eyes more and we have so much fun during his “wake time.”
Although nothing really beats when he’s asleep and snuggly.
This is how we’ve been doing church! CCV Online!
Can you see how much he’s growing already?! SLOW. DOWN. TIME!!
