How We Edit Our iPhone Photos for Instagram

It’s no secret that we l-o-v-e Instagram. Yesterday, we shared how we’re able to quickly remove unwanted objects in iPhone photos, and today we’re going to share how we quickly edit all of our cell phone photos for Instagram.  We share a ton of our professional work on our Instagram accounts, but, of course, we also love to share instant photos from our personal life taken with our trusty iPhones, too. Being people who are crazy about light and color, we’re consistency sticklers, so we just want everything to flow in the grid, even when it’s taken on a cell phone.

Here’s what we mean. Let’s take a quick look at this screen shot of Amy’s Instagram. You’ll see a lot of our favorite professional photos with two cell phone photos mixed right in! You can probably spot them if you really look hard enough, but at a glance, all the photos just GEL! It makes her little photographer heart feel peaceful.

Remember yesterday when you saw that before and after photo? Not only did the signs on the fence disappear, the whole photo now looks fresher, brighter and cleaner. That’s what we’re going to talk about today.

Iphone_0003

Imagine if we had just posted the photo in the grid as originally shot! Bleh! Instead, this bright and light one fits right into the grid with our professional photos, even though it was shot and edited on an iPhone.

So how do we quickly accomplish that on the go? Allow us to introduce our other favorite editing app, PicTapGo! Just like TouchRetouch, it’s only $1.99 in the app store!

Our favorite thing about PicTapGo is the user control. We have the ability to layer actions (or “filters”) and choose how much (or how little) should be applied.

Here’s how we do it, step-by-step:

1. Pic: Open PicTapGo and select the photo you want to spruce up. Then scroll down to select the filters you want to add.

2. Tap: Select the first filter you want to use. Then use the slide bar in between the words “undo and redo” to choose how much (or how little) you wan to apply to the image.

Then repeat! You can do this with as many actions/filters as you want until you have your desired look. We’re just always using clean-looking, true-to-life filters that correct exposure, color temperature and contrast to stay consistent with our professional images, but you can get as wild as you want with it!

Our favorites:

Brightside

Lights On

Shadows

Warm It Up/Cool It Down

Auto Contrast

Once you’ve layered the filters you want, then you can save it. So you’ve already “picked” and “tapped,” now you just hit “go.”

3. Go: On this screen, you have the option to save your “recipe” to make it faster next time (image below on the right). So for example, if you’re always brightening, bringing up the shadows and adding a pop of contrast, you can do it once, and then PicTapGo will remember that in your “recipe” section. Think of it just like a Lightroom preset.

3. Save your “recipe,” give it a name, and then don’t forget to save the image you’ve already enhanced to your camera roll (which is the top right square in the image above).

4. Enjoy: Once you’ve saved a recipe, whenever you open a new photo, instead of layering filters from scratch, you can click the heart that says “my style,” and in one click, get the result you’re looking for! Here’s the the before and after in one click!

And there you have it! We hope this makes your cell phone photo taking and posting a little more enjoyable!
